Chevron Corporation (San Ramon, Calif.) has pledged $5-million for the hurricane-relief efforts: $3-million to the American Red Cross, and $2-million to local charities to be determined by the company.

Coca-Cola Company, Foundation, and Bottlers (Atlanta) have pledged $5-million to the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army (Alexandria, Va.), and other organizations. The company is also providing Coca-Cola products such as Powerade and Dasani water to victims of the hurricane.

Dow Chemical Company (Midland, Mich.) has pledged $1-million in cash for immediate relief efforts to the American Red Cross, $1-million in products and technology for longer-term reconstruction work, and $1-million to match employee donations.

DuPont (Wilmington, Del.) has pledged $1-million, with a focus on disaster relief in DeLisle and Pascagoula, Miss.

Eli Lilly and Company (Indianapolis) has donated $1-million in cash and insulin valued at $1-million to relief organizations.

ExxonMobil (Irving, Tex.) has donated $2-million to the American Red Cross.

Freddie Mac and the Freddie Mac Foundation (McLean, Va.) has donated $10.1-million to relief organizations, including the American Red Cross.

Pfizer (New York) has pledged $2-million, half of which will be divided among the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and the United Way of America (Alexandria, Va.), and half of which will support the rebuilding of hospitals and health-care facilities.

Target (Minneapolis) has donated $1.5-million to the American Red Cross, $500,000 of which has been earmarked for immediate relief efforts.

If you'll look at my original post, you'll see that I certainly did not leave business off the hook... especially oil companies. Their part begins with putting an end to the insane price gouging of oil and related products. However, this problem has as much to do with the oil companies as it does with OPEC.

OPEC is slowly strangling the world with their insane oil prices. They know we need oil, they know we'll pay through the nose for it. They simply charge us just enough that we keep coming back for more... like a drug addict.

Mercury Angel, you truly ARE an angel! What a great list of the "big bucks" people indeed putting their dollars where it matters. I'm tired of the endless complaints about the haves and have nots. While it may have come across that way at the beginning, I am heartened by those who ARE opening their wallets. But, know what? It's the little guys...you and me...that will make the greatest impact financially. There's a REASON Jerry Lewis does the telethon instead of only soliciting donations from corporate America.

That said, I have little patience with people who want to sideline this thing into a political niche. It is NOT a political issue right now. Right now it is a HUMAN issue. The time for political pandering, finger pointing and posturing will be after we have taken care of the homeless and hungry. I would love to stuff a gag in every flipping reporter's mouth that's down there postulating that this is somehow Bush's fault, or the DNC's fault or the mayor's or...or...or... The media is making this into something that right now it does not need to be.

For the love of humanity (and GOD), put politics on the back burner.

Yep, my company even donated like $50,000 I think to the Red Cross. Business usually does have a good heart, even if it sometimes takes a catastrophe to get the purse strings opened.
